Supporting Mental Health in the Wildland Fire Community:

Hi, I’m Jessie Thomas. I’ve had the privilege of working as a hotshot and smokejumper in Region 1 for many years. Today, I’m a nutritionist located in Missoula, MT. I work with individuals and groups providing education how nutrition and lifestyle improve mental and physical health outcomes. The fire community is close to my heart, and I’ve experienced firsthand the toll that preventable health challenges—like suicide, addiction, depression, and anxiety—can take on this group and their families.

On March 26th, 12-2pm MST, I’m hosting a free webinar on “Mental Health Considerations for Wildland Firefighters”, where we’ll discuss how nutrition and lifestyle factors can help improve mental health outcomes. There are no hidden agendas here—I’m not selling anything. I’m just in the unique position of having fire experience, combined with nutrition, and I want to fill a gap in places where I see that people could use the information.

Why Nutrition?

Nutrition is a major missing piece in the conversation about mental health, and unfortunately, it’s often overlooked in the healthcare system. By improving nutrition and targeting specific nutrients, we can make a tangible difference in how firefighters and their families experience job related stress.
